Zamora-Melgoza: Service Learning
As an undergraduate CSU, Monterey Bay Spanish major student I had the opportunity to serve as a volunteer for the Citizenship Project in Salinas, CA during my upper division Service Learning. In doing so I was able to help Latinos between the ages of fifty and seventy years old study for their U.S. citizenship interview. It was a great experience because it made me feel useful and allowed me to become a more compassionate and socially responsible person. It gave me a broader vision of what elder Latinos in the United States go through because while preparing them for their citizenship interviews they told me their life stories and what their experience as an immigrant had been like. I really enjoyed it not only because I felt useful but also because it put me in touch with a group that I hadn’t had much contact with, elderly Latinos.
