Zamora-Melgoza: MLO1
MLO 1: Language Proficiency
1.1 Speaking ability: In order to fulfill my language proficiency MLO 1 I took a diverse range of Spanish courses which helped and allowed me to improve my Spanish speaking, listening, reading and writing abilities. Although my Spanish courses have helped me fulfill my MLO it is important to mention that I am a native Spanish speaker. I was born in México and lived there until age 11, in 2002 I migrated to the United States and since then I have lived in a migrant Spanish speaking community, therefore I am able to speak and communicate my ideas with others fluently.
1.2 Listening ability: The courses that I’ve taken as an undergraduate Spanish student in CSUMB have given me the opportunity to improve my ability to listen, understand the content of what I’m listening to, and take its main ideas and details. A course that has had tremendous impact on improving my listening abilities is Spanish 309, History and Politics of Latin America. This course is offered in English but numerous documentaries in Spanish are also presented. I had to actively listen to the documentaries, take the main ideas and then compose essays.
1.3 Reading ability: Being a native Spanish speaker has also given me the opportunity to read in that language since a very young age, however the Spanish literature courses that I’ve taken throughout my undergraduate education have had astounding impact on helping me improve this ability. Before CSUMB I read in Spanish but I never analyzed or question what I was reading, I never read between the lines but now I do because the courses that I have taken helped me to do so. The courses that have had the most impact on helping me improve my reading abilities are: Spanish 426, Spanish 321 and Spanish 310. In Spanish 426, Narrativa Hispanoamericana I faced challenges because I had to read vast amount of Hispanic novels. The first ones were short but as the semester progressed they got harder.
1.4 Writing ability: CSUMB has given also the opportunity to improve my writing skills. Now after taking different courses I am able to write and express my ideas clearly. One of the courses that helped me do this is Spanish 301. In here I learned how to compose a good essay, how to express my ideas in a clear manner and without confusion. This course serve as the base for other classes because without I would of not been able to write good essays, nor to express my ideas in writing clearly.
