Welk: Service Learning
Service Learning
A component unique to California State University, Monterey Bay is the service learning requirement. Every student must take at least one upper division service learning course that requires 30 hours volunteering at a specific sight. My service learning course had the theme of immigration and since I want to become a teacher I chose to complete my hours in a high school Spanish 1 class at Alisal high school. During my time in service learning we read various works of literature and watched several movies addressing the issue of immigration and the image of the Hispanic immigrant in the United States. This course taught me to be more compassionate towards immigrants as they struggle to arrive and live in our country. As the course was taught in Spanish I was able to refine my Spanish language skills while learning about an important issue in our community. The course theme directly relates to my future career teaching in a California school as number of students will have family members that are immigrants and are even be immigrants themselves.
The hours I spent in the classroom at Alisal High provided me with experience and guidance working with teenage students and creating activities. Since I wish to teach at the secondary level this experience was perfect for me. As I only spoke Spanish at my service learning site I had real world practice speaking the language. I really enjoyed my time in service learning and feel the course improved my Spanish skills and benefited me in my future career.
