Information Technology Literacy
This sixth and last Major Learning Outcome for Spanish majors in the WLC department sets the premise that I ought to be competent in my use of technology to gather, organize, distribute, and present information as related to my scholarly work. Such capabilities are expected in both written and oral formats.
Thanks to my good timing with emerging into a digital age and generation, I have had a number of experiences with information technology literacy. Having been introduced to information technology software such as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and others during and prior to high school, I have since then advanced my technological skills to the point where I am comfortable with using technology to find information, organize it, and present it.
A number of my classes through the Spanish major have incorporated class sessions in which we took a field trip to the library to be taught how to use library.csumb.edu as a search engine for scholarly resources. These sessions were very helpful in providing the information I needed to know in order to conduct efficient and effective scholarly research.
Most if not all of my classes have involved the inclusion of a class presentation in which students were expected to conduct research on a specific topic and then present to the class on the findings from the research. Often time such presentations would be in the form of a Powerpoint slideshow coupled with verbal reportings by the presenter. Through these presentations, my ability to use the Powerpoint software as well as to do well in public speaking drastically improved. As a by-product of these numerous presentations, I became more familiar with other presentation channels other than Powerpoint such as Prezi.
Other personal technological advancements which I gained during my time as a Spanish major at CSUMB include; the use of Google Calendar, the use of Google Docs, and improved skills with using citations. Google Calendar is a virtual calendar which makes for easily accessible information regarding events and responsibilities. Before coming to CSUMB, I had never even heard of this technology. Now as I near the status of being a CSUMB graduate, I am quite acquainted with the software and I have full intentions to make use of it in helping me organize and coordinate my personal life in the future. Google Docs is an application similar to Microsoft Word except for that it allows documents, Excel spreadsheets and more to be shared amongst designated peoples. This allows for much greater efficiency when it comes to group work and collaboration
Thanks to my time and experience as a Spanish major here at CSUMB, I will go forth into the world with a much greater sense of ability in accomplishing tasks thanks to my proficiency in the use of information technology.
