Tavares: Service Learning
Service Learning
During the university course we also had the opportunity to serve our community doing community hours at any local participants; most of the participants had to be involved in the Hispanic culture. It needed to be a place where we could interact with individual that spoke Spanish, there were some interesting places but I opted to do them at a school. The school was Los Padres Elementary; the majority of their students have a Hispanic culture with their first language being Spanish. The person in charge of the service learning at the school place me with a first grade class room, I did my service learning during two weeks that way I could participated more with the students and their parents. I was at the school for about five hours until the end of the day. What I first notice was that each student had a different pronunciation when they spoke. Also the students share with me some of the daily experiences; they were all different some of them had an accent that their parents where from an urban area while others live in the city. It was until the third day that I got the change to meet their parents after the school was over. Every one of the parents that I met was polite and very humble, put I also notice that each of them came from a different part of Mexico. After school I usually had a conversation with some of the parents and I learn more about them, most of them told me about their lifestyle. Many of them have a difficult lifestyle they either work very late or work at night; most of the parents that I met were the ones that work at night, they told me that they would leave for work in about two or three hours and coming back until the next day very early. They spoke to me about some of their traditions; first of all they wanted to know where I came from and what I was doing there. After I presented myself they were very friendly I notice that they had many of the same beliefs that I had they even spoke about their traditions. They had many of the same traditions that I personally have. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people with a different background but spoke the same language. Also I got the opportunity to understand more of their lives and how difficult is to live in this country for them.
