MLO 4: Secondary Cultural Knowledge
During the course of my education I also experience another culture other than my own. It was a new opportunity to learn of another culture, the course was Japanese Visual Culture. During the course I learn about how different our cultures are. We saw how he Japanese culture has change over time, now Japan is one of the top larders in technology. This can be reflected on their buildings especially in the city of Tokyo. The Skytree in Tokyo is a very tall building that uses new technology to resist earthquakes; also they have invented the bullet train which levitates on the rails. First I learn that the Japanese culture has more emphasis on aesthetics. In the culture beauty it’s not always visible, it could be that the smallest imperfection that makes the simplest thing beautiful. Also during the course we saw how pop culture has influence Japan as a society, not only Japan put the world. We could see this on the anime films they produce, they are not only cartoon but there is message for the viewer. Furthermore we can see that manga has been a popular trait of Japan, they are very similar to comic books. Manga has something for every age group and it’s something that the reader can associate on a personal level. Japan also has influence the world by the anime characters they have invented like hello kitty image that has been very popular. During the course there was a Japanese tea ceremony that I had the opportunity to attend. Before attending the tea ceremony I didn’t realize why it was important to the culture, it was a great way to learn more about the tea ceremony and the concept behind it. At the entrance we were greeted by one of the Japanese professor Dr. Sekine. She explain us that we had to purify ourselves not only our body but our mind. There was a small fountain were we could wash our finger tips. What I first notice was that the room had many arrange in a typical Japanese manner. On the center of the room they had a stove where the tea was going to be made, on the back ground there was music coming out of a shamisen which a Japanese instrument that has a resemblance to a guitar. The ladies that were in charge of the ceremony explained how did originated; they told us that it came from China. They told us how the process was going to be and how we should receive the bowl. There are many little steps that make the tea a beautiful event to experience.
