MLO 3: Literary and Cultural knowledge
During the courses that I took there was one were the instructor instruct us on this part of the word, beginning with Mexico all the way down to Argentina. The course was interesting we saw the cultures that were living in this part of the world before the Spaniards came to conquered and colonized the Americas. I learn specific point in the glove that was important to us as a culture and how did they influence us, geographically we saw how distinct some places are although they are not very far from each other. When the Spain came to the new world they establish themselves in specific point around the Caribbean making their way in and out accessible. There were many different cultures that were located in strategic parts of the continent and each of them was different from the others, geographically they use what they had to survive. We saw their beliefs and how their lives cycle around those very beliefs that they had. In addition we also saw how their beliefs influence their behavior; some of them were very violent, they use the art of war to establish new territories and to maintain power. Some of the civilizations practice family structures beginning with the leader to the lower ranking person in the family, and depending on the structure they had they were assign a task. The ones that live in a higher elevation use family clans to help each other to survive. Many of them were advance in the arts of mathematics, astrology, architecture and even had a counting system that allows them to keep records of what they had to survive. For some their rituals were barbaric but for them were an issue of everyday life. Also we had the opportunity to read about different political stand points; most of the authors that we read in the courses wrote about their political values in their writing. Some of them had the opportunity in their writing to express themselves in a way that that verbally they could not accomplish because of the oppression of certain people. Some of them use their writing to speak about political problems that they saw and witness in their own country, in a way their writing was the tool that inform us about how harsh was the epoch that they were living in. in addition we see some of their ideology of where did humans came from, we can see this in the Popul Vuh which is the origins of humans in the eyes of a Guatemala's western highlands civilization.
