MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge
I had the opportunity to take a course in linguistics during my first semester at CSUMB. I know how to speak fluently in Spanish and by taking this course it helped me develop my writing structure. During the linguistics class the professor taught us how to use the grammatical rules correctly; the instructor shows us where to use the rule and where we had to exclude it. It was very helpful because he did not only mention the rules but he told us the meaning behind it and why they are use in that specific way. We also had the opportunity at the end of the course to help another student of a lower division courses with their grammar. We had to use all the rules that we had learned during the course correctly to help the student, also we had the opportunity just as the professor to tell that students why we use that particular rule the way we use it. Also we had to make lesson for the student to practice were she had the most errors, we saw an improvement in grammar by doing this. During this course we had to write in many of the assignments for this course, mostly papers that we revise more than one time. Each time that I would revise mine I would notice that I had fewer errors in my writing. One of my last courses was phonetics, it’s a challenging course it’s not only grammar but it goes into a deeper understanding and word separation of the Spanish language. There are many rules that we have to learn and fallow just as in the grammar course to be successful and learn, we also learn how different sound system of Spanish and why we used that particular sound. I also had the opportunity to enroll in courses that explain us how our culture was form and specially our language. We got the opportunity to see how other ancient cultures influenced how we speak today. It was an interesting course because we get to see how the history of our language evolves from Spain to our present day; many of our words that we use in Spanish originate from other countries. Furthermore we learn the culture from this part of the world, and how did the Spain and its colonization of the new world influences us one way or the other.
