Tavares: MLO1
MLO 1: Language Proficiency
During my academic development at CSU Monterey Bay I had the opportunity to meet new people. Many of the upper division courses that I took where in Spanish with the majority of the students having a well develop Spanish as their first language. It was in our courses that we got the opportunity to know each other and at the same time we to spoke to each other in Spanish learning new words. Likewise when we had to communicate with our instructors many of the conversations were in Spanish. Having conversations with our instructors assisted us to achieve a new vocabulary since we have professors from different back grounds. Our instructors really motivated us to grow as professionals especially when we had to present, read out loud during class or group projects. As students we had the opportunity to listen to our colleagues and their perspectives on a subject, it could be their interpretation of a novel that we had to read for a particular course. Listening to their points of view aid us to think differently about the novel or the idea behind it, personally it help me understand a different point of view that I had not think about if the other student have no mention it. As time passed we had the opportunity to enroll in literature courses, during these types of courses we were exposed to different authors from different countries and epochs. Each of the authors had a different background so their writing styles were not the same, some of them were more challenging than other but we had to read the novel and participate in discussions. Furthermore during literature courses we had the opportunity to read out loud in class, it facilitated us to be more confident about our reading abilities and encourage us to keep reading and to be open minded to different ideas. Our writing ability was one of the aspects that the courses really brought out in the entire student that were enroll. For many of the courses we had to write papers, exams and even create a book ourselves. The courses that we took had in their curriculum that we as students needed to show our writing abilities. There were different approaches but the more familiar one to us was to write a paper that show that we understood the context of a novel that we were reading or the course that we were enroll, we had to use our abilities to write and express ourselves either in a well written paper or writing prompts on exams.
