Suarez: Service Learning
Learning Service:
Before deciding to major in Spanish B.A., I was a HCOM student. I had the opportunity to enroll to HCOM 317S: Advanced Composition SL. In this class, we had the chance to combine advance writing in a service learning context. We strengthen our communication skills and social awareness while we applied theories in area schools and literacy programs. One of primary goals was to identify how social justice and education related to each other through our experiences at different educational centers. Ours reflections were expressed in strong academic writing assignments.
My Learning Service practice was at Marina High School. I had the opportunity to assist an English teacher with two different groups: regular class and honor student class. I noticed how some students were limited to education. Usually, those students were English Second language speakers or immigrant background. I experienced how language minority students struggled academically, and how little resources they had to actually achieve proficient levels of English. I had the opportunity to bring my concerns and insights to class and put them in perspective based on how the educational system in the United States is created and who actually benefits from it.
We discussed in class as a group, very diverse one, by the way, about different themes such as education of the oppressed, social groups, racial and gender discriminations, etc. We wrote about those subjects using specific example brought in by our own experiences in our Learning Service sites. In this way, we were able to understand the core of the educational systems,-its faults, limitations, and privileges.
Now, that I am a Spanish major student, I can say that Learning Service helped me to create consciousness about students struggling with language, and their struggles in their young ages can affect them for their entire lives. I have the privilege to domain two languages, Spanish and English, and with them, I can help Hispanic kids to see education as a bridge to a successful life and not as monster.
