Approaching the end of my high school career, I was eagerly planning my goals of a higher education. I was confirmed as an Art Studio and Art History major at Humboldt State University. Two years into my degree, I decided to change my major to International Studies with an emphasis in Spanish. I was seriously exploring the option of transferring schools looking to the World Language and Cultures Department at California State University Monterey Bay, however was short credits to do so. I never saw that as a closed door, but rather it was an opportunity to improve. I was exploring my possibilities and had a revelation; art is an element of every culture. I needed to fulfill my aspirations of studying abroad, the concept intrigued me. A person is able to travel, learn an abundance of life lessons, a language, establish relationships with local teachers, children and families while simultaneously earning college credits. I always had an affinity to the Spanish language and La Cultura Latina. Having basic knowledge of Spanish from previous courses I decided to apply for a program in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Finally, the acceptance letter to study abroad arrived and I innocently started the amazing journey without full comprehension of the impact this opportunity would have on my life, my future and my career objective.
During my first semester while Studying Abroad in Fall 2011, I was officially beginning my intensive language learning plan. I had started out this study abroad adventure having shifted my bachelors degree from Art to Spanish. While abroad I had been extremely challenged with complete immersion. I lived with a very supportive host family and was enrolled in a great program however, every day was a constant climb uphill for the first three months. The challenge fed my personal ambitions to succeed and become proficient in Spanish. The reality of study abroad is that you learn in a formal instruction environment, in the school setting. Another element of learning is outside the formal institution utilizing the informal environment by applying studies in your everyday endeavors within the community. Sping 2012 I was finishing my second semester abroad and realizing I never wanted to leave. That experiences gave me so much and I did not want it to end. I had no choice and returned to an eagerly awaiting family and looked forward to starting another new chapter of my life at CSUMB. Within the World Language and Cultures classes for my Spanish major I continued to challenge myself and ultimately here I have completed a major milestone as a young bilingual adult.
I would be honored to direct you through my portfolio and get a better understanding of my college career and how I fulfilled my university requirements toward obtaining my Bachelors Degree and Graduated Fall 2013.
