Rodriquez: MLO5
MLO 5. Cultural Praxis.
As I mentioned before, I come from Mexico. I lived there for 14 years before moving to this country. I have also experienced the Hispanic culture in the community of Watsonville.
Living in the state of Michoacán for 14 years gave me the opportunity to be able to explore in depth the culture and the experience needed for succeeding at CSUMB. While living in México, I went to elementary school and middle school.
However, in 1999 my family immigrated to California, I was a teenage boy who did not want to come because I did not want to leave my friends and my live behind. I would be surprised a few years later when I realized that moving to Watsonville had been the best thing that could have happened to me.
I started High School and little by little that changed my prospective about my future. Taking ESL classes as well as Spanish classes were shaping my personality. It wasn’t long when I got involved in a club participating with music performances as well as acting in plays that we put together for migrant parents meetings every month. At this point I was falling in love with my culture that I decided to study my culture in a deeper way, that was when I decided to come to CSUMB to make Spanish and its culture my focus of study.
One of the ways in which I was able to meet this MLO was taking Spanish 3001S during the fall of 2011. During this class I had the opportunity to work with High School students. My main task was to coordinate a play and putting it together so that they could perform for parents in one of the migrant meetings held at Watsonville High.
After finishing with this service, I developed the area of being a leader and also helping students with migrant background with their school related activities.
Some of the challenges I faced with this MLO was working with high school students and getting them to focus on the task we had on hand, and also working with the school district and its regulations.
