Rodriquez: MLO4
MLO 4. Secondary Cultural Knowledge.
Learning another culture has been one of the best experiences I have had during my studies at CSUMB. I took a Japanese course, which its main focus was discussing the social issues that the country is facing today, as well as some of the issues that the country and the population had to go through.
This course gave the opportunity to explore in depth the critical issues concerning Japan and learning the culture has been interesting as well.
By completing the course of JPN 311 gave me the knowledge about a foreign language. Also had the chance to compare some aspects of my culture and found out many differences, rather than similarities.
I have developed the area of using a different method of researching that I am used to. For example in this course I had to use APA style when it comes to writing and doing research jobs. This gave me the chance to expand my abilities to do citations as well as a vast knowledge about the Japanese culture.
In the future I would love to take more classes related to Japanese culture, such as the study of the educational system and explore in depth the system of entrance exam taking for university and how it is that this exam dictates the future of students for the rest of their lives. I will explore how they prepare for this exam and what do they do after they passed the exam; explore the details of this system.
One of the challenges I found taking this course was the fact that most of my fellow students were Japanese mayors, so they had more knowledge about the culture and the terms they used to describe certain issues in Japanese and I did not understand Japanese at all, so the concepts were difficult to keep track of which term was associated with certain issue.
