MLO 6: Information Technology Literacy
In my first semester at California State University Monterey Bay I took a CST 101 course. This course taught the basics of many programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel as well as Photoshop and how to build a website. Although I already knew how to use many of these programs I did learn a few new things here and there. It was through many other classes I learned how to apply my technology skills.
In several other classes I also was able to attend a few library sessions. Each session would go over how to access the library database and properly search for refrences when using it. We also learned how to use other databases such as Jstor, which became one of my favorite databases to use for educational papers. Although I never used it, another resource we learned about in these sessions was the interlibrary loan called ILLiad.
In classes such as SBS 348, Span 304 and Span 310 I was able to use the skills I had learned about making a presentation. I also learned of a new presentation software called Prezi. This new software was difficult to figure out but it was a new and interesting way to present my projects. Another tool I used in my many classes was Google-docs. Many classmates had heard of the software before and yet it was all new to me. I was able to use both types of software in my Span 310 class with my group. We were working together on a project and because of Google-docs we were able to keep in constant contact with each other while working on the assignment, even if we were not all at the same location. It was easier to stay in contact with everyone in the group. It was also convenient to use Prezi because it was online also. We could all work on the group assignment even if we could not all meet together.
All the technology skills I managed to learn here at CSUMB definitely applied to my Capstone project. At the very beginning of my Capstone process I had to propose a topic and research it. In order to research my topic I used the many online databases as well checking out some books at the library. From there I obtained the information I came up with a few research questions and a thesis. Over the last few months I continuously did research using the Internet, more databases, and checking out even more books from the library. After months of research I finally had a solid paper to present to my classmates. Even though I would have liked to have used Prezi for my presentation, I thought the PowerPoint would look more professional. In the future I hope to use these technological skills and learn more as the technology advances.
