Andaulsia, Spain in the Summer of 2011
Since high school it had been my dream to visit Spain, it did not matter what part of Spain so long as I went. I was able to fulfill that dream in the summer of 2011 by studying abroad in Seville, Spain. Although it did not matter where in Spain I went to study, I am now happy that Seville was my first experience in Spain. From there I was able to travel to places like Cadiz, Granada, and Córdoba. In my last weeks I did my best to live like a true Spaniard. Staying in Spain for a summer was not enough time to accomplish living like a Spaniard but I will never forget the wonderful experience.
One of our very first trips was to Jerez and Cadiz. First in Jerez we went to the Bodega González Byass Tío Pepe. This bodega had barrels of wine everywhere and some of them had been signed by famous people from all over the world. Other had signatures from important figures in history as well as many kings and queens of Spain. After a wonderful tour of the bodega and learning of its history we made way to Cadiz. There we spent a day under the sun at the beach living as the locals did. Many of us tried our Spanish speaking abilities by ordering food at a restaurant for lunch.
Later that summer a few friends of mine and I decided to visit Granada and Córdoba. First we visited the beautiful city of Córdoba. We had no idea how to get anywhere in the city but with our combined efforts we made our way to the Mosque – Cathedral. A year later I would learn about this Mosque-Cathedral in my Span 316 class. When taking this class I was able to recall the Mosque-Cathedral when I visited and could see the Arabic influence in Spain. A few days later we left Córdoba and arrived in Granada. In Granada we had the privilege of visiting the Alhambra. There were some features of this massive palace that were not on display so we did not get to see everything. When I do travel back to Spain I plan on visiting the Alhambra again to see the many features I could not before.
Throughout the semester my professor would have my classmates and I write in our journals with a specific topic in mind. Below are some links to a couple of my entries, documents, and assignments from that summer.
