MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
For this major requirement I took six classes in culture, making it my emphasis. Through the various classes I took I was able to gain a reasonable understanding of different Hispanic cultures. More specifically, my Spanish 308, History and Culture of Aztlan, and Spanish 316, Spanish Culture and Civilization. These two classes gave me the knowledge of history and culture of two civilizations. In these classes I was able to see both civilizations grow from beginning to end, or present.
History and Culture of Aztlan was more than the title suggests. Through the history and culture of Aztlan I was also able to gain a better understanding of Mexico and the United States. To be more specific we learned about the indigenous people of the southwestern United States. This included the history of Aztlan, Spanish colonial times, the Mexican period, and the settlement into the west of the United States. Rather than learning from an American History book I was able to truly understand the circumstances from the indigenous people’s perspective. After finishing this class I felt a deeper understanding and connection to my own culture of Mexico and the United States.
In Spanish Culture and History class I was able to learn about the development of the Spanish culture and civilization. With every new era we learned, such as the eras of the Visigoths and Romans, about the geography, religion, sociology, architecture, art, and more. We also learned how every new culture throughout the era left a deep impact on Spanish culture. Before taking this class I was able to take a study abroad trip to Spain. My previous experiences in Spain helped me to connect better to the content of the class. I do plan to one day go back to Spain so that I can relive my previous experiences but also so I can visit the other various historical places I learned about in this class.
In the future I do plan on visiting various parts of Latin America and Spain because of these classes and others. I recall my SBS 348 class (I have examples of this class work under MLO 6) covering Mayan culture and civilization. Recently I took Span 348 on Peruvian culture and civilization. Both of these classes have inspired me to visit these locations one day and remember what I learned in these classes. Having emphasized in culture gave me a greater cultural appreciation and understanding.
