MLO 1: Language Proficiency
My level of Spanish proficiency is officially assessed through the Capstone course, which involved a twenty-page paper and a presentation all in the Spanish language. Through several upper division Spanish courses I have performed in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the Spanish language.
In my Spanish 301, Spanish Composition and Oral Practice, and Spanish 305, Spanish for the Professions, classes I was able to practice my speaking skills within the classroom as well as outside it. Within the classroom of both classes I was able to have conversation with my classmates as well as my professors. Through our use and practice of the classes new vocabulary I was able to retain a lot more vocabulary than by simply using flashcards as I once did in high school. With the new vocabulary I learned in class I was able to apply it to the service learning cite I was placed at and in the work place. It was because of my practice in the classroom I was able to grow out in the work place.
With the conversations I had in my classrooms I was also able to practice my listening abilities. Most of the Spanish classes I took were conducted solely in Spanish, which also helped develop my listening skills. Through my experiences I gained a better understanding of the spoken Spanish language. My better understanding was useful at my workplace as well since I was able to assist any Spanish-speaking customers, whereas I had difficulty understanding before.
In my Spanish 305 class I would often times read other students compositions as well as the readings assigned to us in class. At the beginning of this class there were a few details I would miss in the readings assigned, however with a little extra work I would eventually come to fully understand the readings. Eventually I would not have to put in as much extra work to understand more details.
It was in my Spanish 301 class where I routinely wrote diaries and other compositions. When I first received my graded diaries and other compositions back I would see many red markings. As the semester went on however, I would see fewer markings. Spanish 301 and 305 were the first few classes I took within the Spanish major. These classes helped me to establish the basics of writing in the Spanish language. From these first initial classes I have grown to be able to write full essays for class.
