Going back a few years, I never thought I would end up studying Spanish as my professional career. I come from a Spanish speaking background, and when I decided to come to CSUMB to study Spanish as my major my family and friends were unsure why I wanted to study Spanish, if I were able to speak and write, they did not know that my goal was to be able to write and speak my native language in a proficient way, and being able to study the cultures involving the langue was another part that they did not understand, and I almost went with their advice to study something else; now I’m glad I did not listen to them.
Studying at CSUMB gave the opportunity to fall in love with a culture and a language I knew only the basics. Throughout my stay at this university I have been able to develop my knowledge not only with my native language and being able to write it a speak it at a higher level but also understanding the mechanics of it, and most importantly I had the opportunity to study the cultures that involve the Spanish speaking community around the world.
During my stay at this university I was able to take a variety of classes to improve my knowledge and abilities that I will need to be able to become a reliable Spanish teacher in the future. The classes I have taken go from grammar to literature and this is what made my study such a pleasurable stay.
For example for my MLO 1, I took SPAN 426 which was analyzing literature, this class gave the opportunity to increase my language proficiency by doing a variety of writings related to the Latin American Literature and also being able to perform different oral presentations.
When it comes to linguistics and language knowledge its hard to pick a specific class since all of the upper division courses require a high level of understanding and speaking ability. Lets take the course “Spanish for the Professionals” as an example. In this class it was my responsibility to use as much professional vocabulary as possible to be able to meet this requirement for this class.
I could keep going describing all the classes that I took and I would have to write a whole essay about my career experience, but it is not the idea.
I would like to share why I decided to do Spanish as my major. The reason was because when I was in High School I had the best Spanish teacher I have had. He inspired me to become a teacher for so many reasons, the most important one is the fact that he changes prospective about studying and inspires to be just like him and to be able to change at least one life just the way he changed my life and my desire to study and to become a Spanish teacher, and little by little its coming together.
What I have learned form this major is the knowledge about the cultures relating to Spanish speaking world. My initial goal was to become a Spanish teacher and this goal is closer now that I will be able to graduate and I am a step closer to my initial goal. There are many areas in which I am proud of, for example I am proud of being able to correct works that other present to me to written in Spanish and I feel great to be able to help others. Another skill that I have learned by taking this major is the ability to understand and to respect other cultures around the world and to be able to understand their needs as well as being able to get the best out of the cultures, like their literature.
In the future I wish to develop the ability to be a successful teacher being able to create lesson plans and making them interesting for students and for anybody who takes my classes and most importantly the fact that they get as much as I got from my Spanish teachers here at CSUMB.
Abstract
The Education of Women During Francisco Franco’s Dictatorship
Women is the perfect human being which keeps society in harmony and is responsible for bringing light and beauty to the world; however, during Francisco Franco’s Dictatorship (1939-1975) women went form being free and independent, to be considered a human being who does not think, does not feel, does not see, and that it’s sole purpose is to be a house wife and to become a perfect mother. Therefore, the type of education women received during this period of time had to be changed. The education of women consisted in teaching them the basic subjects such as the art of cooking, the needlecraft and the raising of the children, without putting a side the obligation to take care of the husband and to please him in any way he pleases.
In this research paper, I divide the evolution of education that women received by putting it into decades analyzing the changes that took place in education as time passed by.
