Orozco: Service Learning
Service Learning
Service learning was a great experience for me. I complete my service learning at a program from the Alisal Family Center Healthy Start Plaza Comunitaria, the goal of this program was to help Spanish speaking youth and adults complete their primary and secondary education. In this program my responsibility was to form small groups in order to help on a one on one basis. I tutored students in areas such as reading, writing, math and science, all of the teaching was implemented in Spanish. As I mention before, doing my service learning at La Plaza Comunitaria was a great experience because it was very rewarding seen the difference that I could make in the educational life of adults. Also, I was really motivated by the students I help because although they were already tire from working during the day in the fields, they still were very diligent and enthusiastic to assist and do their best to complete their primary or secondary education.
My service learning experience was well related to the Spanish language and the concepts of compassion, social responsibility, justice and diversity. Like I previously mention, I tutored students in Spanish, I helped many of them improve their reading and writing skills in Spanish. By helping them in these subject areas I also had the opportunity to experience what it is like to teach Spanish which is of great relevance to me since my goal is to be a Spanish high school teacher.
Furthermore, this was also great experience because I worked with students from diverse nationalities. For example, I worked with Mexicans, Salvadorians, and Ecuadorian students. Working with students from different countries of Latin America was a great opportunity to learn more about the culture and traditions of these countries. Also working with students whom are field workers helped me become aware of the impact one can have in the life of people who really need the extra support in their education. Sometimes our society make us become very egocentric but completing my service learning in this program helped me change my mind in the idea of contributing more to my community.
Completing my service learning in La Plaza Comunitaria helped me improve my Spanish skills since I really put in to practice many of the things I have learned and also I made the difference in the primary and secondary education of youth and adults whom for one reason or another were force to quit school but whom are trying their best to complete it.
