MLO 6: Information Technology Literacy
The use of technology is something very relevant to my experience as a college student. In almost every class I have been exposed to the use of technology in relation to a scholarly work. The goal of MLO 6 is to be able to demonstrate my ability to use technology in support of my scholarly work. There are several courses that helped me fulfill this MLO, like a previously mention I took several courses where the integration of technology was a requirement to support my academic work. In almost every class I had to do presentations and a key component of my presentations was the integration of Power Point. The use of PowerPoint has been one of the easiest of my technology literacy; I have no problem in using this visual aid for presentations. Also, the use of Word is another key element of technology that I had to use for my classes. In all of my courses at some point I had to write essays and knowing how to use Word became crucial especially when having to put something in alphabetical order, adding references, doing MLA or APA format and many other things that have to be included in a research paper. Familiarizing with all of Word features was an important component in fulfilling my technology literacy.
Although I thought that the use of technology would never be an issue for me when incorporating it into my academic life, last semester I confronted a big challenge with the use of technology. For my class Span 310, Hispanic Children’s Literature I had to do a group project in which the objective was to read a piece of children’s literature to later as a group come up with or own version of the piece of literature we had read. In our group, we decided that after reading the story we were going to convert it into a movie where every member of the group would become a character from the story. Writing our script, acting it out, and recording the scenes was not very hard, the hard part came when we had to edit the scenes in order to convert them into a 10 minute video which was going to be display in class as part of our final for the semester. We really struggled putting the scenes together, cutting some parts from some scenes, adding the background music and recording the voice of our narrator. It was really hard putting everything together in order to finalize our 10 minute video. Although we spend many hours on this project, it was great that I experience this because this definitely helped me learned many things about the use of technology in an academic environment. Our video was a success because through the use of technology we were able to present in a different way a story from a book. Movie making helped me learn about various important components of technology. Consequently, through the use of PowerPoint, word and with my experience of movie making I think I can demonstrate my ability to use technology in support of my scholarly work.
