Orozco: MLO5
MLO 5: Cultural Praxis
Hispanic culture more than been a crucial aspect of my major is also part of my identity. I was born and raised in Michoacán, Mexico. The fact that I am Mexican is of great relevance to my major especially if we talk about fulfilling MLO 5: Cultural Praxis. The goal of this MLO is to be able to demonstrate that I have been actively immersed in and have internalized Hispanic culture.
Being Mexican and currently residing in Salinas, California are two important aspects that have definitively helped me fulfill this MLO. Being born and raised in Mexico has totally immersed and internalized the Hispanic culture in me. The Hispanic culture is part of who I am, I grew up in a very cultural town where we celebrated many Mexican traditions such as El dia de muertos, el dia de los reyes magos, and La Revolucion Mexicana only to name a few of the Mexican tradition that are part of the culture.
After immigrating to the United States in the year 2001 when I was 11 years old I was confronted with a very drastic change because I no longer lived in a little town but in a small city, Salinas, California. This change really impacted me but as I became a teenager I realized that Salinas was not as foreign as I thought. A great majority of its population is of Hispanic descent; as a result, this has helped me continue to immerse and internalize the Hispanic culture.
Another aspect that has definitely allowed me to immerse and internalize the Hispanic culture is my participation in the service learning course. I completed my service learning by participating in La Plaza Comunitaria of Salinas. La Plaza Comunitaria is an educational center that offers immigrant farm workers the opportunity to finish their primary education. In here I had the opportunity to work with farm workers whom wanted to complete their primary education. Completing my service learning in this place helped me become more sensitive to the needs of immigrants and by tutoring them I also had an opportunity to learn about the traditions of other Latin American countries such as from El Salvador and Honduras. Also, the service learning course gave me the opportunity to implement my academic Spanish and to learn that Salinas is not only a community of Mexican immigrants; Salinas’ population is very diverse since we have immigrants from various Latin American countries.
Being born and raised in Mexico and having immigrated to a community such as Salinas has tremendously helped me immerse and internalize the Hispanic culture.
