Orozco: MLO3
MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
MLO 3 was one of the MLOs that I mostly enjoyed completing. Since the emphasis for my major is literature and culture I enrolled in classes that were of great interest to me and as a result I enjoyed everything that I learned in relation to this MLO. I enrolled in several classes which definitively helped me achieve the goal of this MLO which is to understand the ways of thinking, the behavioral practices and the cultural products of the Hispanic culture.
One of the first courses that I took was Span 304, Introduction to Hispanic Literature, through this course I learned about the pieces of literature that were first written in Spanish. La Celestina; for example, is one of the first pieces of literature that was written in Spanish. In Span 304, I develop a paper on La Celestina based on one of the many themes that appear in this master piece. Introduction to Hispanic Literature is very well connected to Span 321, Master Pieces of Hispanic Literature: Spain. Span 321 is like a continuation to the course I previously mentioned. In this course I mainly learned about the various literary genres that emerged in Spanish literature, in here I include an exam I had about the various literature genres that were covered and that I learned about in this course. For example, La epopeya is a literary genre that narrates the life of a historic hero or legend and the best resemblance of this is el Cantar del Mio Cid.
A course that definitely helped me in achieved the goal of developing an understanding about the behavioral practices of Hispanic cultures is Span 309, History and Politics of Latin America. In this class I learned about the independence, social changes, economic and political development of Latin America. Due to my experience in this class I have learned about the behavioral practices of Hispanic Cultures. In this course, I learned about many countries but the one that mostly got my attention is Cuba. The behavioral practices of this island are very different from those of other countries due to the lack of independence. I wrote a paper about one of the most famous political figures of this country, Fidel Castro because he has been a political figure that has not only impacted the behavior of Cuba but also of other Latin American countries such as Venezuela.
Furthermore, SBS 348, Maya Civilization is a course of great relevance to this MLO because this course allowed me to understand the culture products of Hispanic culture. In this course I learned about the many pre-Columbian civilizations. I wrote a paper about the differences between Copan and Palenque which were two Mayan ancient cities, it was interesting learning about these two cities because in today’s society there are still people of Mayan decent and civilizations like this one were crucial towards shaping today’s society.
