MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge
In order to fulfill my language and linguistic MLO 2 I took two courses. Sometimes as a native Spanish speaker one might erroneously think that you know everything about the language but enrolling in this course proof me that although I might know the language there is a lot to learn about it. The first course that I took for this MLO is Span 301, Spanish Composition and Oral Practice. In this course I had the opportunity to improve my writing skills by learning about the writing structure and also about grammar. In this class I was presented to several topics from the textbook and also to movies from Latin America, after watching these movies I had the opportunity to write compositions based on the them. For example, I wrote an essay based on the movie Machuca which narrates the effects of the Chilean Revolution of 1973. In this essay I demonstrated my knowledge of the language by writing with academic vocabulary and with an advanced grammar. Furthermore, writing assays like this one also helped me improve my skills in the writing structure, after taking this course I really became aware of the importance of having a strong introduction, developing a well organized body and of concluding your paper by restating your thesis.
The second course that I took for MLO 2 is Span 313, Introduction to Spanish linguistics. This course was of great help especially because as a native Spanish speaker it helped me understand and learn about the sound system of Spanish. For example, in this course I took an exam that assessed my ability to recognize the phonetics and the vocabulary and the different parts of the articulating apparatus. Learning about the articulating apparatus was a great challenge, I never thought about the fact that our tongue touches different parts from our articulating apparatus in order to sound out different letters. Fortunately, I had a great professor, Dr. Brown, whom was very passionate about linguistics and he was very patient to teach several aspects about Spanish linguistics. I also put a lot of effort by reading from the book, doing flashcards and later putting everything into practice so that I could really understand the linguistic concept that I was taught about. Also, taking this course gave me the opportunity to learn some interesting facts about Spanish in a worldwide sense. For example, I learned that there are more Spanish speakers in the United States than there are in Cuba.
