Service Learning Experience
My most rewarding course was my Service Learning which I completed with the Center for Community Advocacy (CCA). The CCA is an organization which helps farmer worker-leaders advocate for improving housing and health conditions in Salinas and Pajaro valleys. Also, this organization is associated to other noon-profit agencies such as the art group in the community of Greenfield to contribute with the community. I volunteered my time with the art group in the community of Greenfield, where I had the opportunity of engaging in several activities that helped me understood the concepts of compassion, social responsibility, social justice, and diversity.
www.dictionary.com defines compassion as the feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. Most of the art group participants in the community in Greenfield are monolingual Spanish speaking or limited English speakers who needed my help in translating documents or explaining concepts related to the activities the art group performs. I believe that by helping the art group writing and translating documents, I fulfill the concept of compassion because I felt empathy for the members of the group who needed to know the meaning of their documents to make important decisions.
I believed some of the social responsibilities of this art group are extensive and has influenced young members of the community. The time I volunteered with the group, I met several students who had made a positive life changes while participating in the art group. Some of them were at high risk of joining gangs, but after participating in the art group, they were encouraged to continue in the arts and not violence. To see some of these students turning their lives around was very rewarding to me. Therefore, I made a great effort to continue volunteering my time with the group.
I consider social justice as a moral principle which encourages people to help others in need. For this reason, I decided to continue supporting the group. The art group is a monolingual or English limited comprised mainly of immigrants all ages; therefore, my help in writing letters to possible sponsors soliciting donations was beneficial to the group. The art group desperately needed donations to continue offering free classes to the large community of immigrants that reside in Greenfield California.
To me sharing my knowledge and time with the Greenfield community, was rewarding because I learned about the needs of my community and that there is always a way to help others in need. Also, I learned to be more compassionate toward others and to be more self-motivated to work in the community. After I completed my service learning with the CCA, I learned that a sponsor to whom I wrote a letter seeking for funds made a donation of art supplies, which made me happy.
