MLO 5: Cultural Praxis (Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion)
The student demonstrates that he or she has been actively immersed in and has internalized Hispanic culture.
The Hispanic culture has been my life and all I have known for all my life. I was born in México and I studied there up until 5th grade, then my family and I came to the U.S when I was about 10 years old. I have live in Watsonville, CA since then, and even though I’ve live here for 13 years already my Hispanic rots are still very intact. It wasn’t hard for me to complete MLO 5 in which we had to demonstrate that we are actively immersed in Hispanic culture, because at home everything is Hispanic. We eat Mexican food, we only talk in Spanish to my parents all my friends are Hispanic so even outside of home I still always speak Spanish. I also have been working at a Youth Center, and since my community is mostly Hispanic, our participants are for the majority Hispanics. In the center we get kids who are barely getting here from México or other Hispanic countries, we help them to incorporate into the American culture. We also help kids do their homework; we get a lot of kids who are enrolled in bilingual education so we help the kids do their homework in Spanish. Most of the kids feel more comfortable speaking in Spanish so the Spanish language is something were are constantly using in the center.
For my service learning I also helped out at the high school I attended. In that high school there are a lot of students who are still learning English and who still need help in their fist language which for the most part is Spanish. I had the opportunity to help kids with their project and translating words which they were still not familiar with. That was a really enriching experience because I got to help kids which were in the same situation in which I once was. Also I felt really happy knowing that I had inspired some of the kids to stay in school.
It is no doubt that I will always be involved in the Hispanic culture because I have Mexican roots. Having the Hispanic culture as my background as also help me succeed in school because I have been able to put my previous knowledge into practice as well as learning new things about my culture which I didn’t even knew about. I love been part of the Hispanic community as well as been part of the Spanish department that has thought me a lot.
