MLO 4: Secondary Cultural Knowledge
In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.
In addition to taking courses within the Spanish department, we also took one course that dealt with another culture. I choose to take a course within the Japanese department. I wanted to know more about their culture in general. I have always find it unique how their culture is very different and it had many unique traditions and ways of doing things like any other. The course I took was 309 with was Japanese literature in translation. I choose to stay within the literature courses because I believe like they are more enriching to oneself and teaches us more in depth without having to be a total history class. I learned a lot about the culture and mainly were they get their beliefs from. We read things from the very first genre of writings within the Japanese culture. These type novels, short stories or poems were written mainly by women, thru their writings they expressed their suppress feelings. Women were repress during the early times of the Japanese culture, they mostly always had to stay home taking care of house chores, trying to keep their husbands happy if they had one, and also they had to accept their husband having another women if they wish to do. Most of the time their marriages were arrange so their feelings were not taken into consideration and from this many great novels and poets were written. We also got to learn about the many unique beliefs Japanese people have trough reading folk tales. Folk tales had to do a lot with nature, animals and mythical creatures, from these Japanese get their religion and their Gods. Japanese people have many Gods and they are everywhere represented in many things in mature. They see a God in everything that surrounds them. From these we also see why Japanese do certain things and why they have so many Gods. The way I demonstrated all the knowledge I acquired from all these readings was by writing an essay which included older readings from more contemporary readings. The theme I choose to cover for this final essay was to analyze how the role of Japanese women has change over time and how it is portrait thru readings. I discovered that a lot of things have changed women are definitely more independent than they used to be during the Heian period. Also women have less children because they take on professional jobs and they are not as dedicated to their homes as they used to be. Definitely this course gave me the basic knowledge to understanding the Japanese culture.
Here you can find a copy of this essay talking about Japanese women and their change, as well I have included the PowerPoint that I used to present my topic, as well as two of the assigments we had discussing folk tales that we read for this class.
