MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
The student develops a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic cultures.
The Spanish department has given me the opportunity to enrich my knowledge with the many literature, history, culture and Hispanic politic classes they offer. I have become more knowledgeable of the issues that affect Hispanic cultures and how these issues affect others around the world. I have opened my eyes to new things; learning about the different customs within Hispanic cultures is very enriching. A good example of a class that has definitely help me reach this level of knowledge has to be SPAN 309. This class deals with politics in Latin-American. I have learned a lot about the different countries we discusses. Know I know how many of them came to be, how they underwent social changes, also how they did it to grow their economy and become an independent country. Literature has also been a big part of this learning adventure. I have fall in love with all my literature classes, they were really hard courses but at they end they were really enriching and I know that for future goals this knowledge will help me greatly. Especially the knowledge I picked up while taking SPAN 426. That course was a Latin-American literature course; we read novels as well as short stories from a variety of genres from authors from all over Latin-American. These also help me get a bigger picture as well as a closer look at the lives of common people in Latin-American countries. Also it has expanded my knowledge of the different writing stiles that Hispanic authors initiated and that are so unique to the Hispanic culture. Also SPAN 310 has enriched my knowledge of Hispanic literature this one focusing more on children’s literature. There are many unique styles to Hispanic childrens literature. For example legends, fables and stories that deals with saving the ecology systems.
Examples of work that demonstrate how I have successfully gained this knowledge are, for SPAN 426 is one of the exams we took through the semester. We had to identify key terms also we had to answer short questions about the different novels and short stories we had to read. As well analyze the different main themes of the novels and stories we read. For this exam I successfully passed it with a 95/100. This was a great accomplishment because this was a really hard course and to accomplish such great is an honor. For Spanish 310, we had to writte an essay responding to a movie or documentary that we watched in class which impacted us a lot. I choose to write about Cuba, this documentary about Fidel Castro open my eyes to a lot of things I didn’t know about Castro. It totally changed the opinion I had about him, and I am extremely happy with this course because, college courses are supposed to change our beliefs if not our time during our college studies has not done any benefit to us. I feel that SPAN 309 has accomplish that and more it has started something within me that makes me what to know more about what happens in these Latin-American countries. To add to this I include another essay I completed for this course about Brazil in which i discussed the topics that were exposed in a film we watch during class. I have also included the final exam that i completed for SPAN 310, in which we analyse one of the stories we read.
