MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge
SPAN 395IP History of the Americas
SPAN 395IP Latin American Civilization and Culture
The Latin American Civilization and Culture, a class taken abroad in Spain, looked at the history of Latin American. I had always read fiction books and seen in movies that explained las indigenas however, the groups and communities we studied in this course were no longer an abstract myth or idea that but by reading texts, watching film clips, and memorizing facts of the differences and similarities these cultures shared, my knowledge expanded as I began to know more about the cultures and civilizations that laid the foundation for Latinos today. Although geographically separated, the various cultures represented in Latin America have similar language roots, literature, and music their variations are what make them unique and special to learn about.
The built in expectations for this class was very structured; the class focused on lectures and test preparation in order to compare the differences and similarities between countries and cultures. The first day in class we defined Hispanoamerica, Latinoamerica and Iboamerica; terms that have share similar roots but have branched off to create different distinct cultures. Hispanoamerica is defined as having a Spanish language, traditional languages relative a Americas, Spain and, mixed indigenous languages. Latin America has a mix of indigenous languages and cultures, and Iberian Peninsula is located on the Iberian Peninsula, previously inhabited by Spaniards and Portuguese and the Latin romance language. That being said, the class looked specifically at the languages and cultures of each country and region to better define the similarities and differences between all.
My ability to value culture and language variants was expanded in each focus. I learned most from class work with group members and videos our professor used to teach us about culture and language in Latin America. I looked forward to learning new terms and words specific to particular regions that I will be able to use when I have an opportunity to visit those countries. Furthermore, I look forward to stretching my personal beliefs, to be able to recognize elements of ancient religions and civilizations in the larger cultural social communities I find myself a part of. I hope to look at similarities that I share with those individuals even though we come from different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.
