Miriam Olmos
¡Hola! Mi nombre es Miriam Olmos, soy parte de la clase de español del 2013. Aquí podrán encontrar ejemplos de mi trabajo durante mi asistencia en la universidad estatal de Monterey Bay.
Hello! My name is Miriam Olmos, I am currently in my last semester of study at CSUMB. I am majoring in Spanish with an emphasis in language and culture. I was born in Michoacán, México and I lived there until I was 10 years old. Since I was in elementary school I was really interested in Mexican history as well as Hispanic history. When I came to the U.S and entered college I my interest for Hispanic literature, history and culture became bigger, for this reason I decided to choose Spanish as my major. My intention choosing this major was to expand my knowledge about Hispanic culture, the richness of the culture and the importance it has for my culture. Hispanic culture, history and literature have influenced other cultures around the world as well as the politics within our Hispanic cultures. As a Hispanic, learning about all this is really important it gives me a clearer understanding of were I come from. I have learned a lot a lot from been in the Spanish department, I have learned about how the Hispanic culture develop how it was a mixture of two worlds, Spain and the Americas, I have learned a lot about our history, politics, and even more about our the literature. Our Hispanic literature is very rich and it mixes a lot of writing styles which makes it so magical. A lot of our history is transmitted thru literature is fascinating ways, we can read a novel with history background and that way learn about our history without having to read a history book completely. My emphasis was in literature, because I love reading books that teach me something about history and about my culture, with this I have learned to analyze literature, write research papers analyzing readings and also I have further my understanding of the Hispanic cultures. With the language classes I took, I also was able to learn about the different dialects within the Spanish language. This was an enriching experience for me because I was also able to better my language communication and learned how to used professional Spanish. In the future I wish to further my knowledge of Hispanic literature and learn in further detail about all the different styles of Hispanic literature as well as developing my knowledge about our history and culture. With gathering all this knowledge, I intent to share all this information with other people so they to have a better understanding of the Hispanic culture and the literature and so they can enrich their knowledge and learned to love literature as I did while attending CSUMB.
All the MLO’s as well as service learning helped me get to the point where I am at right now. In order to demonstrate all this knowledge the Spanish department requires us to complete a research project or as we call it Capstone. For my capstone I decided to research something related to the Mexican history. This I how I decided to research about the Cristero war, and the way I did this was by analyzing the novel Héctor. The title of my research paper is “The Cristero war told from the point of view of Jorge Gram in Héctor Novela Histórica Cristera.”
For many years, since the beginnings of the conquest, the Catholic Church has had conflicts with the Mexican government. The conflicts between the Catholic Church and the government started to become more noticeable at the beginning of 1924, when Plutarco Elías Calles took command of the Mexican presidency. In 1926, Calles added the 130 amendment to the Mexican constitution which prohibited any religious practice in the country. In result the religious people from the northern and central states of México, who were against this laws, decided to take arms and defend their religion and the Cristero War broke out. The struggles of this war were transmitted by Jorge Gram in his novel Héctor Novela Histórica Cristera. With this novel Jorge Gram’s purpose is to defend the legality of the arm war in name of Cristo Rey. Gram gives us the opportunity, with this novel, to learn and feel of the struggles of the cristeros. Also Gram; enhances the characteristics of the Cristero war, in all the cristeros, which are their love for Cristo Rey and the Virgen of Guadalupe, their bravery, and their love for their freedom. Hector reference for defense of the Cristero’s rights and the legality of the arm war.
