MLO 6: Information Technology Literacy
During my freshman year I took a course called Technology tools, which helped me understand the use of technology and its importance in college. After taking this class I was able to do better research with appropriate research methods and use different technology tools. For example, I made movie with my teammates and we used a program that is installed in windows computers called Moviemaker. Using this program came very handy when I needed to film and compile different videos together. I also took another class called Excel Spreadsheet that helped me understand the usage of the program excel in Microsoft Office. I used this program in different professional and non-professional settings.
Another two classes that better prepared me for the research of my Spanish capstone was WLC 300 and Pre-Capstone. During these two classes I participated in different library sessions where I learned how to research thoroughly to find the information I needed for my capstone project. I also learned about different library tools that I could use if I didn’t find anything in our CSUMB library. Illiad and WorldCat, for example, were two library research programs that helped me find books, articles, essays, and other works related to my capstone research paper. This became really helpful to use because I wasn’t finding a lot of the books or articles I needed, but through the Illiad program I got them from other universities for free of cost. Participating in these tow sessions allowed me to learn to differentiate between scholarly sources and sources that have not been reviewed by professionals.
Some recent technology tools that I had the opportunity to experience were the clicker and a new presentation style called Prezi. I used the clicker in several of my classes for exams or feedback to professors. Prezi is an interesting program that is like a different version PowerPoint. This program is a lot more fun to use and has gained recognition in many countries. I first heard of this program when I was in Spain, an international student from Japan was using it.
The areas of this MLO that I feel strongly developed in is the appropriate use of technologies in research and studies relative to my major. Knowing how to research and what methods to apply helped me gather investigation sources a lot faster. However, what I didn’t develop through my classes was the use and practice of oral presentations. Although I had been exposed to many presentations and I have given presentations myself, I still don’t feel extremely confident to deliver the information I gathered orally.
Below are some samples that fulfilled this MLO.
