MLO 4: Secondary Cultural Knowledge
While I studied abroad in Spain I was able to participate in an Islamic Culture course. Being part of this class allowed me to become culturally competent on the Islamic culture. This was very beneficial because of the immense influence of Islamic culture in Granada. In this class, we learned many things about Granada, which is the town I stayed in for one academic year. As I walked through the streets I was able to put into practice what I had learned. Since there was a prevalence Islamic influence in Granada, I was exposed to their foods and dressing styles. Their food is very healthy and nutritious. Many times I found myself eating at one restaurant that sold authentic Islamic food and I really enjoyed it because of their menu, but also because of the architectural designs. I felt like I was in an Islamic country.
Learning about their history expanded my knowledge and understanding of their customs, believes, traditions, and religion. I learn the importance of their architecture and the significance of their religion. Learning about the women’s role was a little difficult for me to comprehend, because of my feminist philosophies. However, I tried to go into depth regarding this matter with a friend of mine who was Moroccan and practiced Islam. We learned we had different views on the way we are treated by our societies, but yet we came to similar conclusions about our position in this world.
What I enjoyed the most about Islamic culture was their architecture and music. In class, we were able to listen to some musicians and we learn the history of their instruments. My favorite one was the tanbur. We also went into depth about the history of the Masques and we visited a few. I think it was really interesting to learn about the culture and history of Islam when I was staying in Spain. I saw many similarities in their culture and my Mexican culture. One of them was the conquest of their land and the influence of Spanish culture. Some of them, like most Mexicans, transformed their costumes to the Spanish ones, to become accepted in society. Understanding these similarities sparked my interest in this culture, but also allowed me to feel strongly about their culture.
