MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
I developed my cultural and literary knowledge tremendously while I studied abroad in Spain. Although at first it was a little difficult for me to get use to Spanish instructors teach me about my history and culture, at last I was very pleased with their work. In my class, Historia de America Contemporánea I was able to understand some of the politics and governmental procedures that Latin America has used over the years. In this class I develop a geographic understanding of America as well as a cultural and historical comprehension of Hispanic culture. With assignments such as presentations and exams I had the opportunity to research on topics that I had never taught before.
While I was in Spain I also learned many things about the Spanish culture and its literature. In my class, Actualidad sociopolitical en Espana, I learned how the Spanish people came to acquire social programs like free education and healthcare, and how they fight to maintain them. For example, while I was in Spain there was a movement going on regarding cuts from government spending into schools; entire cities like Madrid and Seville were out in the streets protesting.
The areas of the MLO that I feel I accomplished where a cultural understanding of both the Mexican and Spanish culture and literature. I am more knowledgeable about the Mexican culture because I grew up with this culture. However, I wasn’t aware of many things about it, like the history of the Indigenous people in Mexico or South America. Learning this history made me more connected with my ancestors and I felt more proud of having indigenous blood. The sociopolitical factors that affect Mexican communities that I became aware of helped me understand the social conditions that the Mexican people are facing in present time. The political system in Spain is a lot different form the Mexican system because Spain still has a king as the main political figure and Mexico consists of a “democratic” government structure. The Spaniards are very involved in politics (a lot has to do with their history of oppression) while Mexicans are not. I feel that Spanish people are more educated because of their free access to education, although some of them don’t take advantage of such access.
In my literature class, literatura latinoamericana, I learned how the American (meaning everything in the continent of America except the U.S) literature has a lot to do with the oppression that the people experiences from institutionalized government structures but also from its own people. In some poems from Sor Juana we were able to see the oppression and discrimination against women. In readings from Jose Marti, we learned how the Cuban struggle had surge and how he was the first to start an army against Spanish forces.
Fulfilling this MLO was overall very rewarding. I was able to learn plenty from two different cultures and their literature. I had the opportunity to understand their sociopolitical struggles and how these struggles bring hope to their people. Experiencing Spanish culture first hand, while studying abroad, helped me understand their literature and culture more thoroughly.
