MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge
While I was living in Mexico, I was able to develop my linguistic skills and abilities in the classroom as well as with my community. I experienced and practiced 15 years of Spanish education. I also completed this MLO while I studied abroad by taking a variety of different Spanish classes. In my advance grammar class, for example, we were able to review the importance of the Spanish language and put it into practice. We revised the structure of sentences and what each part of the sentence was called. We also learned the sound system of Spanish, although this was more helpful for English learners than for myself.
In my literary class of Autores Granadinos, we looked at different literary works from authors of past generations. Though this method, we were able to understand the use of contemporary words in the Spanish language and also the importance of the language back in the day. This language for example, was a lot more creative and poetic and was taken a lot more seriously in homes and in institutions. Today, there is a lot of profanity used in everyday language and is seen as common and normal, but users fail to realize and understand the meanings of their words. In my business class, Economia y Negocios en Latinoamerica y Espana, I was able to practice more professional and advanced language. We learned many terms that could be implemented in our everyday lives. We also used those new words to understand the economical situation that Spain was facing during our stay.
Although I was able to practice my writing and speaking skills once again, I also developed tremendously in other areas. For example, I had forgotten the meaning of the structure of a sentence and why it is important to know it. Knowing this, the structural development of my grammar increased greatly. Learning the history of Spanish language and usage helped me realize the complexity of it and the differences of different Spanish speaking countries.
One of the biggest challenges that I experienced while I completed this MLO was the use of Vosotros in the Spanish language. In Mexico, this part of the language was not used in school or outside in the communities. In Spain however, this part of the language was used every day. I found it difficult at times to make the connection between the words of a reading to what I already know. After a few moths though, learning the basics of this Spanish language style was less difficult. Being able to understand the differences between Spanish spoken in Mexico and Spanish spoken in Spain helped me to recognize the differences between the two cultures.
