"The Effects of Assimilation and Acculturation on the Chicano Family in the United States"

Sinopsis
La cultura dominante de los Estados Unidos que es impuesta en la sociedad, hace difícil que las familias mantengan sus identidades culturales. Los mexicanos/chicanos que residen en los Estados Unidos comprenden que tienen que adaptarse para progresar en este país. Sin embargo, el grado de adaptación para muchos es demasiado ambiguo. Reconocer los pros y los contras de la aculturación y la asimilación servirá para ayudar a determinar el grado de adaptación necesario para sobresalir en este país. Con el fin de entender la dinámica de la aculturación y asimilación entre mexicanos/chicanos, tenemos que conocer los efectos de la cultura y la sociedad estadounidense de generación tras generación. En cada nueva generación se van perdiendo más y más valores culturales. Por esta razón este trabajo es importante. El comprender que la asimilación no es necesaria para ser productivos en este país, servirá para evitar que los mexicanos/chicanos abandonen su cultura y se conformar a la cultura dominante estadounidense.
English Abstract
The dominant culture United States society imposes on people makes it hard for families to maintain their cultural identities. Mexicans/Chicanos who reside in the U.S. understand they need to adapt to progress in this country. However, the degree of adaptation is ambiguous for many. Acknowledging the pros and cons of acculturation and assimilation serves to help determine how much adaptation is necessary in order to progress in this country. In order to understand the dynamics of acculturation and assimilation among Mexicans/Chicanos, we must understand the effects of U.S. culture and society from generation to generation. With each new generation more and more cultural values are lost. Such, is a reason why this project is important. Understanding that assimilation is not necessary to be productive in this country will serve to prevent Mexicans/Chicanos from abandoning their culture and conform to the dominant U.S. culture.
Research Questions
–When, in history, did acculturation and assimilation in families of Mexican descent to the U.S. culture begun?
–What are the effects of assimilating and/or acculturating to the U.S. culture?
–What are the reasons why Mexicans/Chicanos assimilate and/or acculturate?
–What are the benefits and disadvantages from assimilating and acculturating to a dominant culture?
–What are some solutions to prevent assimilation?
