Service Learning: United Farm Workers
I had the opportunity to do my services learning at the United Farm Workers. The UFW states that the nonprofit organization was formed in order to provide farm workers and other working people with the inspiration and tools to share in society’s bounty. In order to accomplish this goal the UFW has set four core values that represent the organization: integrity, si se puede attitude, innovation, and empowerment. Integrity meaning being honest with not only society but with yourself as well. Si se puede attitude, having a strong and powerful personal and organizational spirit that reflects confidence, courage, and taking risks that will promote a better future for society. The union uses non-violent and empowerment organizational tactics that demonstrates discipline, respect and a strong fundamental belief. The organization’s focus is fair treatment for farm workers and also providing immigration legal services, among other services. They make sure the farm workers are protected by forming contracts with agriculture employers.
As mention the UFW organization also offers immigration legal services. Assistance for those that are looking for a legal status in the country and are eligible for the programs offered to pursue this legal status. One of the legal processes offered is the U visa application. The requirements for the U-visa is that the applicant has been a victim of a crime such as domestic violence, sexual or physical aggression, rape, torture, blackmail, among other violations. I had the opportunity to do my service learning with this organization in Salinas, CA, where I worked closely with the legal representative of the UFW. I learned that the U visa is one of the most solicited applications among the members of the organization. Before taken a case there is a lot of information processed, when a case is taken it is usually guaranteed a 100 percent positive resolution, meaning that the applicant will receive legal status in the country.
Working closely to the legal representative gave me the opportunity to practice my Spanish in a professional setting. I learn a lot of formal legal terminology, and I was also able to practice my writing by translating a lot of legal documents from English to Spanish. Absolutely my favorite part of my experience was helping the members of the union. I learn about the struggles many of them go through and that sometimes just being able to listen and communicate a word of compassion or endurance to them makes the struggle less heavy to deal with. I enjoyed my service learning experience so much that I have now become a volunteer at different organizations where I am able to use both my English and Spanish to help those in need.
