MLO 5: Cultural Praxis (Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion)
To demonstrate that I have actively immersed in and have internalized Hispanic culture I have completed 1 of three of the pathways to accomplish this major learning outcome. Pathway two: I have lived and worked in a local heritage community over an extended period of time without interruption for at least two years.
I live in a diverse city, Santa Cruz, CA where there are Hispanic communities, especially people of Mexican origin. Even though this town is majority populated by Caucasians, there are many towns that surround Santa Cruz where the majority is populated my Hispanics. Many of these Hispanic people come and work in Santa Cruz. I happen to work in a construction building supplies store where many of the customers are Spanish speakers. Providing customer services in Spanish has defiantly helped me carry a conversation professionally and with ease. I’ve had the opportunity to expand my vocabulary in Spanish, learning many words that have to do with the industry I work in. Outside of work I use Spanish daily as well with family and friends. I attend a Hispanic based church were many community events are held at. Different cultural events like “Día de los Muertos, ” traditional May 10th Mother’s day, “Semana Santa,” “El día de os Reyes Magos, y algunos otras celebraciones que forman parte de mi comunidad.
Other then living in a community where there is a strong Hispanic population, I travel to Mexico yearly. I have the opportunity to experience Mexican traditions and speak Spanish daily. I’m able to carry a conversation and become part of cultural celebrations. Learning about different cultural events in schools has really help me understand this events more therefore enjoy more and really know what is actually being celebrated. I’m also able to converse from a more formal Spanish to a relaxed social Spanish, which gives me the occasion to perfect both. In conclusion I am deeply immersed in Spanish based communities and cultural events, through family, friends, school, and work I have been able to continue formalizing my Spanish and make of the language a daily use in my life.
