MLO 4: Secondary Cultural Knowledge
In order to demonstrate a general knowledge of socio-cultural group other then a Hispanic one or American culture it took the Jap 309: Japanese Literature in Translation. This course help me develop a basic understanding of Japanese culture ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values and philosophies, behavioral practices, art, history, and literature. This course explores early Japanese prose and poetry to detect native motifs that continue into modern literature. Dramatic scripts, I-Novels, surrealistic fiction, and contemporary authors including Yoshimoto Banana and Murakami Haruki were read and written about.
Through the readings we learn about the Japanese early culture and its evolution throughout time. I big part of this class was reading the works literature then watching it on film, which really helped me capture a better idea of the message the literature piece, was giving. An example of one of the most interesting types of literature covered was the Haikus. Haiku poems date from 9th century Japan to the present day. Haiku is more than a type of poem; it is a way of looking at the physical world and seeing something deeper, like the very nature of existence. We explored these poems a lot and class and also had the opportunity to write our own Haikus.
This course in general gave me a basic idea of the Japanese rich culture. Within the different assignments I learned about different Japanese practice religions, the importance of the Shrines, as well the meaning and what animals such as foxes and snakes represent. Having the opportunity to take this class allowed me to study a different culture, that provided me with a more cultural knowledge that permits me to have a more global perspective.
