MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
The development of reasonable understanding ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies, behavioral practices and the cultural art such as history, literature and music of Hispanic cultures was develop in the courses such as Spanish 306: Cultural and Civilization of Spanish Latin America, Spanish 308: History and Culture of Aztlan Southwestern US, Spanish 330: Hispanic Testimonials, Spanish 304: Introduction to Hispanic Literature, Spanish 310 Hispanic Children’s Literature, and lastly Spanish 331 Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature: Spain. Coming from a Hispanic background was really advantageous when it came to learning about Hispanic culture. I had a understanding for the cultures in Hispanic America but there is a lot I learn in the courses above that formalized my comprehension of it.
In one of the most fascinating course I had the opportunity to take here at the State University of Monterey Bay was Spanish 306: Cultural and Civilization of Spanish Latin America. This course covered the development of the Latin American countries beginning from discovery of the New World. Covering the process of the spread of the new language: Spanish, and the expansion of the Christian religion. We covered the struggle for there independence of each country in Latin America, allowing us to recognize each cultures ideas, attitudes, values, and overall history. Throughout the culture courses I took, geography played a huge role. Geography was emphasized throughout the lessons; we learn each Latin American country’s names, and capitals along important rivers, oceans, and mountains.
Throughout my studies here at the university I took a variety of literature courses that gave a strong overview of Spanish literature. We covered the most significant literature eras and how they represent what was going on during the time, allowing us to analyze some of the most recognized literature pieces of the Spanish language. Reading these pieces of literature was difficult. The language used is quite different then the Spanish language I was use to reading which made it somewhat of a challenge to follow along. With the support the professors afford and with the analyze work we did of each work I was able to have a better comprehension of the message in the literature and also a better idea of what was going on during the time the piece were written. I am now able to recognize the most influential writers that have impact the Spanish literature.
In conclusion both my cultural and literature knowledge have been greatly improved, with the help of these courses that topics such as geography, history, political systems, art, and religion. Through the cultural courses I learn more specifically about these topics, and though the literature courses we saw all of these concepts reflect in the masterpieces.
