In order to fulfill the MLO- Language Proficiency category I have prepared myself with classes that have prepared me with the ability to speak, listen, read and write in the targeted language: Spanish. Prior to coming to California State University of Monterey Bay, CA as a junior I had only had one-college courses in Spanish. Coming into these college level Spanish classes was a challenge but being a native speaker helped a lot. My course work here at CSUMB has been a range of study that includes, Spanish 301: Composition and Oral practice, Spanish 302: History and Phonetic Structure of Spanish Language, Spanish 306: Cultural and Civilization of Spanish Latin America, Spanish 308: History and Culture of Aztlan Southwestern US, Spanish 330: Hispanic Testimonials, Spanish 304: Introduction to Hispanic Literature, Spanish 310 Hispanic Children’s Literature, Spanish 331 Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature: Spain, Japanese 309: Japanese Literature in Translation, GWAR Business 309: Ethics, World Language and Cultures 300: Major Pro Seminar, lastly World Language and Cultures: Major Capstone. All of these courses have helped me develop my Spanish literacy. The assignments and focus study on many of these classes allowed me to prepare my ability to speak fluently Spanish, as well the ability to listen and comprehend it, lastly the ability to write Spanish. We prepared by presenting many Power Points, writing many papers, analyzing different literature, and doing a variety of practice grammatical sheets. Not only have I developed my Spanish inside class but also outside of it. My service learning experience allowed me to be in a professional setting where I was able to practice a more formal Spanish allow me to learn a whole new range of vocabulary.
In conclusion I have been able to improve my Spanish with the help of great professors and the classes, that not only taught me a language, but also have taught me about a variety of Latin-American cultures and Spain’s culture.
