Service Learning
In order to completed my Service Learning I took Spanish 300S. The chosen topic for the class was Immigration and we had to work with an organization that was related to the topic. I worked for more than thirty hour with United Farm Workers (UFW) organization in Salinas. This organization purpose is to help agriculture workers , to provide them with supplies, protect them at work and give them right. This organization helps immigrants that work in the fields and don’t speak English. Most of the people at UFW are bilingual and they protect people from bosses in case they are suffering from oppression or pesticides.
Working with UFW was one of my best experiences because I was able to meet a lot of immigrants that worked in the field and heard about their experiences. I was able to answer phone calls, help to translate and read documents to immigrant workers, update contact information for workers and make folder with files including the benefits for workers. I was also able to review the benefits that immigrant have being members of the organization and the discounts that the organization provide for them. This was a great experience because I was able to visit the strawberry field in Salinas and interview some of the workers in there. I learned how the workers are treated and the payment that they receive. I also went to different boycotts with the farmers to protect for a better treatment and rights and the field. I went to Sacramento capital with the farmers and to talk with the governor Brown.
In My service learning class I did a PowerPoint presentation about the activities and responsibilities I had at the organization. I also wrote journal every time I go to do my service to keep track of my time but also about the tasks that I was able to do every day. Also in my service learning class I was able to complete my statement of purpose and my resume. This class was very helpful because it gave me experience at work but it also prepares me for the future by working with an organization where I interacted with different people.
With this service learning at United Farm Workers I was able to complete part of the university requirements.
