Maria Orozco

¡Hola! Mi nombre es María Orozco, en la primavera del 2013 recibiré una licenciatura en español con un énfasis en cultura y literatura. En este sitio podrán encontrar algunos ejemplos y narrativas acerca de como cumplí los requisitos de ésta licenciatura.
My name is Maria Orozco, I am a Spanish Major with an emphasis on literature culture. I am graduating in the spring of 2013 and here are some examples of the coursework I completed in order to fulfill my major requirements.
Spanish is one of my greatest passions in life, more than a language it is part of my identity. Consequently, being Mexican and immigrating to the United States are two important factors that influenced my decision of majoring in Spanish. Living outside of Mexico made me appreciate my native language, as a result I decided that in order to learn more about my language and my culture I was going to major in Spanish.
CSU Monterey Bay has given me the opportunity to learn various things about my major. As an upper division student in the Spanish department I have learn that Spanish is more than a set of grammar rules, Spanish conveys various components such as culture, linguistics, history, and politics. My initial goal was to better my Spanish speaking skills, I wanted to learn academic vocabulary but as I have enrolled in a variety of courses my initial goal definitely evolve due to the fact that I have gained a great passion for Latin-American literature. It has been extremely interesting to learn how our Latin American history is implicitly depicted in literature.
As I mention before, enrolling in various Spanish courses helped me gain a deep passion for literature, consequently this is the area I feel most proud about learning in this program. I feel most proud about this area because before been part of the Spanish department; I didn’t enjoy literature of any type. I only read because I had to in order to complete class assignments but I went from not liking literature to loving it. Not only do I now have a great passion for literature but I have also become an analytical reader analyzing pieces of literature from famous authors such as from Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Carlos Fuentes.
Although I have learned many things about this major, I want to further develop other areas of the major such as that of linguistics. I think that I have to have more knowledge about the linguistics of Spanish so I want to further develop my knowledge about it.
