Maria Martinez

Welcome to my page my name is Maria Gregoria Martinez. My major is Spanish with emphasis in Literature and Culture. This Spring 2013 I am going to be part of the Commencement ceremony but my official graduation is going to be on Summer 2013.
The main reason because I choose Spanish as my major is because I come from a Mexican humble family where the target language is Spanish. As Spanish is one of the main spoke languages around the world I decided to concentrated in my target language and learn more about the literature and culture from other countries. Also because I live in Salinas a small city where everyone speaks Spanish and come from Mexican families. I believe that every language is important in order to communicate and interact with people from different cultures and societies. Something that really interested me was to study about the civilizations from Mesoamerica and Sudamerica to learn about the past history and the way our ancestors lived.
In this major I have learned about the Spain novels, author and different movements such the romanticism and the modernisms. I also have learned about the different Mesoamerica civilizations such the Maya and Aztec and about their rituals and beliefs they had. The most important is that I have learned about the multiculturalist and diversity that exist in our society because I have studied about the Latin America countries. Learning about their capital, economic and the way people lives has helped me to increase my knowledge about culture and literature and also it has helped me to completed assignments in my major.
At the beginning I didn’t know a lot of information from other countries than mine. I felt that I needed to know more about other cultures and people in order to understand other and in other to communicate. Later on I realized that literature and culture was my passion and that was the main reason I decided to focus in this subject to teach in the future and to be a good teacher with enough knowledge.
I feel proud for being part of this World Languages and Cultures because I have meet a lot of students from other cultures specially from Japan, I have had teachers from Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Cuba and Spain. Most of my class classmates come from Mexico but from different states and they have different traditions. This helped me to interact with different people and learn about them and diversity and multiculturalism that exist. I also feel proud because I feel that I learned a lot from the culture and literature from other countries and also because my teachers and advisors helped me to be prepare for this investigation but also to be prepare to be a future teacher.
In the future I would like to work more in my vocabulary because I want to have a strong and advanced vocabulary. Also I would like to work more in my grammatical errors and become a better writer. One of my main goals is to continue higher education to get my Master Degree in Spanish and learn more about the culture and literature from other countries but also study more in deep some of the civilizations.
