I took a wide range of classes related to literature and culture of Spain. The courses I took were Spanish Culture and Civilization, Literature of Women in Spain, Modern/Traditional Songs of Spain, Geography of Spain, Theater of Spain and Literature of Spain. These courses were amongst the most difficult courses I’ve taken. Before coming to Spain, I have never taken a Spanish-speaking course other than the Spanish language courses. It was different and challenging learning about Spain’s history, culture and society completely in Spanish. None of the professors knew English, so all of our questions and comments had to be in Spanish. It was difficult because there was always that one word you didn’t know how to say or your question wasn’t answered because the way you phrased your questions were unclear to the professor.
I remember I was struggling in the beginning of my Spanish Culture and Civilization class. There was certain information about the culture that I did not understand and I felt confused in class. I studied everything I learned from the lecture, however I didn’t pass my first exam. Once the professor went over the exam the next week, I understood a better the information I had missed on the exam. Prior to the next exam, I decided to gather a study group to review for the exam. I found that it helped me a great amount. I understood the questions on the exam a lot better and I received a B+. I ended up getting that same grade for the class and was so proud of myself.
