MLO #5- Cultural Praxis (Cultural internalization and language immersion)
In my study of Spanish I have encounter different opportunities that have change my way of learning and appreciating the Spanish language. The first was when I was working for a Mexican super market and the second was when I did my service learning. In the super market I interacted with people from different backgrounds and slowly they became regular customer with whom I would engage in mutual conversations. In the service learning of CSUMB I was able to contribute to the community of Salinas. I helped in the Citizenship project in a factory that allowed its workers to come to a class in their establishment to study for the US citizenship.
I worked for the Hollister Super Market for five years in the community of Hollister. I was attending CSUMB during this time and I was able to review my understanding of the Spanish language through conversations with my customer. It helped me be more passionate about my leaning of the Spanish. It just seems fascinating that I can speak to my Spanish-speaking customers as well as my English-speaking customer but the most interesting aspect was when I would encounter customers who spoke a different language. In this case I was just fascinated with the possibilities of knowing different languages. Communicating with one another is the key to any job so this was a truly rewarding job because I was able to engage to my community.
In citizenship program, I helped the workers of the company learned about the process for becoming a citizen and as well as helped them get prepared for the questions needed for the citizenship. I was in charge of a group of about 2 to 3 people and we studied the hundred questions and the interview questions. It was repetition processes were I would rotate from student to student to see the level of understanding of the questions. After we did this, I would partner with one student and practice the interview one on one since it was a more personal matter.
I what I learned from this experience was the gratitude of the people and their willingness to learn something. Everyday these workers, even if they were tire from working, they would come in and ready to learn and practice. Their motivation would catch on to me and it helped me do a better job in helping them. The most rewarding part was when I would hear the workers tell me that they had obtained their citizenship.
The service learning was the first encounter I had in the teaching field. My goal in my career is to become a Spanish teacher and this experience was the first time I felt I was the teacher. It motivated me to continue learning to better myself in other to be a good teacher. I felt like I did made a difference and I helped a community become more responsible citizens.
