MLO #4- Secondary Cultural Knowledge
I have learned from both the American culture and the Mexican culture but I had never had a chance to learn from another culture until I took the Japanese course 314. In this course we learned from the Japan and what its culture consists of. In the course, Japan was divided into different representations of its culture. We learned about the family ties, work life, and the aesthetic life. The importance of respect was represented in each lecture.
The Japanese way of tea was one of the topics that were really fascinating to learn about. It explains how in the Japanese culture, this moment is very intimate and significant for the people involve in. The green tea has to be calmly prepared and it has a specific way of serving it. There are many old traditions like this that make Japan the unique country that it is.
I really enjoy learning from the Geisha. The Geisha are Japanese women that study for about 5 years in other to become one. They are entertainers and can be graters in ceremonies or private gatherings. To me they represent Japan’s culture because it’s a symbol of beauty and sensitivity. They never get married and live a life dedicated to serving and entertaining others. They are women devoted to their job and for that I think it represents Japans industrial life.
Another unique topic that I learned about was the way of the flowers. This is called Ikebana. Ikebana is when you admire the beauty of flowers through a short period of life. It’s the way that the person arranges the flowers that is so unique and individual to each person. In this culture I was able to understand a different variety of characteristics that benefit me in the understanding of other cultures belief system.
