Lomeli: MLO4
MLO 4 Secondary Cultural Knowledge
HCOM 346 African American Narratives
To fulfill the MLO 4 requirement I enrolled in HCOM 346 African American Narratives with Instructor Vaughan. Through extensive and informative class reading material we explored the history of and culture of the African Americans. Music plays an important role in the history of African Americans as a requirement for the class I attended several folklore events to actually experience and feel their music. After taking this class I felt admiration and respect for the African American culture, they are an example of perseverance. It also gave me a better understanding the social and behavioral practices. Their folklore and religion was a way of coping with slavery as I explained in my Midterm about the black church. The African American woman played an important role on the story telling to the younger generations keeping important facts of their history and journey alive. The importance of this MLO personally was beyond knowledge of a culture it had to do with comprehending and accepting a different way of life than my own culture. Not to be afraid of our differences between cultures but to find our similarities as we are only one human race. Prejudice and racism are embedded in our society; I strongly believe is ignorance that leads to judgmental conclusions about any given culture. The more I learn about the African American culture I found that the ravages were similar to my own culture. It is time for younger generations to learn about other cultures, to respect, admire and to accept we are all part of the same human race. As we are living in multicultural world I believe its important to know the cultures around us, not only to respect them but also to be enrich by them. I strongly believe that diversity makes us richer, only if we are willing to embrace our differences. I was fascinated with the African American folklore it so rich and colorful and it’s their music touch my soul. Now every time I hear a African American song is not just a different song that I don’t understand instead it reminds me of their history.
