MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge
Span 395 Special Topics: Spanish Linguistics
In order to complete the MLO 2 I took Span 395 Spanish linguistics with Dr. Brown. Through this class I learned the structure of the Spanish language, grammar, and Spanish for professional application.
This class was taught in Spanish as well as the reading material. As a Spanish Native speaker I can communicate in Spanish but through this class I learned the proper grammar especially to write at a professional level. Going back to the roots of grammar gave me a better understanding of the language. I personally enjoyed the reading material because it broadens my vocabulary. My goal is to be a Spanish Teacher at a community college or University this class was very helpful because writing academically Spanish is necessary to meet my goal. Through the written work I completed for this class I was able to compare my level of correct grammar and punctuation from the beginning of the course which was academically poor. Through this class I gain proper grammar and punctuations rules and its importance by the end of the course my writing assignments was much clearer and proper to the meet the University requirements. As I learned in class grammar has its origins but language changes continuously which I was able to encounter some variations on language due to the cultural diversity in the Monterey Bay area. Before taking this class I felt academic Spanish was the only correct one, which also made it easy for me to judge other Spanish speakers whose pronunciation and selection of words differ from mine. Now I understand from a linguistic point of view that there is no right or wrong way of speaking it only differs based on cultural backgrounds, economic status and education with only one purpose communication among other individuals. After the class my view of the world change just by simply learning the complexity of language and how brings people together and changes to meet the needs of the people. Rather than focusing my attention on how Spanish is spoken “right” or “wrong” by different people in different cultures I can appreciate how language allows communication creating unity in a diverse World.
