Spanish is a passion of mine, it’s something that it’s embedded in my blood; it’s my mother language, is what I grew up hearing my grandparents and parents speak, it’s who I am. Spanish is part of my world and my curiosity and desire to know more about it are some of the reasons that led me into deciding to make it major in college. I have always felt proud of speaking this wonderful language but before studying it I really didn’t know much about it other than just the fact that Spaniards brought it to the Americas during the conquest. And I wanted to broaden my knowledge about it. I wanted to know about the history, cultures and literature of Latin America. The other reason that led me into deciding to major in Spanish is the fact that I want to be a Spanish teacher, I want others to appreciate the beauty of the language and I also want to help others realize that Spanish is more than just a language, I want others to see that Spanish is history, poems, books and cultura.
Deciding to major in Spanish has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life because in doing so I have gained so much knowledge. I was born and raised in Mexico; therefore I knew how to write and speak the language rather well but majoring in Spanish helped me to improve the written and spoken abilities that I already had. I also learned about the importance that Spanish language literature has worldwide and how to appreciate it. During my undergraduate studies I also gained knowledge about the history of Latin America and its cultures. For example I learned about the colonial period and the independence wars in Latin America, as well as about different pre-Hispanic cultures, as well as about linguistics, how we articulate words and how the language changes from place to place.
When I stared to study Spanish my initial goal was to improve my written abilities and to gain knowledge about the history of the language and Latin America but soon after starting my Spanish studies I realized that literature was a big part of it and I became really passionate about it. As I continued my studies my initial goal kept and still is evolving, there is so much more to learn about Spanish out there. I want to broaden my knowledge about Spanish language literature and Latin American cultures.
Through studying Spanish I have learned many things but what I feel most proud of is having learned about Spanish language literature and how to appreciate its beauty; it took me only one course to get me hooked on it and from there I decided to make my majors emphasis. For example, I learned that literature presents themes that we can also find in the society of any part of the word and during any period of time. I also learned that literature can help us learn about history without having to read a history book. Another thing that I feel really proud of having learned is about the history and politics in Latin America. I feel proud of having learned about politics in Latin America because I really know anything about; and now after having study that topic I know that Latin American countries share similar histories as well as political systems.
Although I have learned a lot I want to further my studies and broaden my knowledge about Spanish, I wish to keep on developing my knowledge about literature as well as about history, politics and cultures of Latin America.
