Integrative Narrative
When I left CSUMB for the 2011-2012 academic year to study abroad for a year in Spain, I was unaware how it would effect my path to learning more about the Spanish language and cultures that speak it. Initially I had plans to complete a Spanish minor to be able to use the courses I was going to take in Spain to fulfill Spanish requirements. When I returned to the university here in Monterey it wasn’t until my second semester when I learned that many of my classes would be left over and I could graduate with a double major if I took the Capstone course and just two more follow-up classes the following semester. While already enrolled in 15 units to complete my HCOM major, I decided to go for it.
My initial goal for this major was to be able to say I have a double major and show people the opportunities studying abroad gave me in terms of interest and the practice necessary to major in the Spanish language. I am happy to say that I came out of my Capstone course alive, I had my doubts and it was very challenging throughout the entire process. My studying ability and time management transformed throughout because of the work load I had to take on to double major in Spanish, but through that I understood what it meant to be a hard working student and really apply what I know to create a long piece of research intensive work.
Another goal of mine became finding ways to integrate what I was learning in other classes to use them in my final Capstone project. This semester I was enrolled in a phonetics class with Carlos Arrizabalaga. I realized that phonetics is the fundamental basis for any language and especially in Spanish it could help students better understand the language. There are phonetic rules and tendencies that are different in English and Spanish therefore there is an interference between the two, which creates a language interference for the English speaker. The phonetics class taught me to pay attention to details and this directly helped me through my Capstone project as well as the rest of my academic work.
I am most proud of my final Capstone project and presentation. I remember the first presentation I ever gave in Spanish (my second language) and I have come so far since then. It is awesome to get to see yourself grow and have friends and family there to watch you too. I am also proud of my ability to use the Spanish language in different settings and contexts every day. I am appreciative of the opportunity to learn the language through an academic and social lens. I feel prepared and confident to head into the work world and use my Spanish as much as I could English. I hope to use what I learned about teaching Spanish to native English speakers in the future in whatever job I may end up in. I am indebted to the language and I hope to continue to learn and use it in my professional future.
