MLO 6: Information Technology Literacy
The student demonstrates an ability to use technology in support of his or her scholarly work, including gathering,
organizing and analyzing sources and employing appropriate delivery techniques in both written and oral formats.
MLO 6 Reflection
Throughout my time at CSU Monterey Bay, I have spent significant amounts of effort developing my
understanding of different types of technology and my abilities to make use of them in a variety of situations. In
the spring of 2011, I completed the CST 101 course as an introduction to technology and research skills along
with appropriate presentation skills and etiquette. This class taught me how to make use of the abundant
resources our school has to offer as well as reinforced many of the skills I already had.
I have spent time using our library databases in search of project topics as well as sources for research papers. I
have attended several library information sessions with themes varying from basic research skills, advanced
searching techniques, and how to narrow project topics while finding very specific research sources. I have
learned to recognize which types of sources are reliable and give strength to my argument versus which types of
resources to avoid. I have also learned the importance of drawing information from a variety of resources to avoid
bias and ensure that my argument or discussion is fair and accurate.
I have learned to use both MLA format and APA format for citing my sources within written assignments and
creating works cited to provide necessary information and display my ability to make use of appropriate sources.
I have used the OWL Purdue website extensively identifying types of sources and appropriate citation styles.
I have also developed my understanding of several different programs for presentations and projects. I have
worked comprehensively with PowerPoint for the majority of my projects as well as with Prezi, Excel, Google
Docs, WordPress, Camtasia, and various audio programs.
Completing this MLO was not a challenge for me. Learning new technologies has always come easily for me.
The CST 101 class and many of the library information sessions I completed were mainly review for me except
for some of the more advanced research techniques. I mostly value the emphasis that these classes have
placed on the importance of choosing resources to rely on. The thing I found most challenging was making use
of the different citation styles and being able to switch back and forth between the two major styles in different
classes without confusing formats. I know that these are the main issues that I need to focus on moving forward.
